Heavydrive fits 1.4-tonne panes in the Jewish Museum in Frankfurt
The Jewish Museum in the centre of Frankfurt am Main underwent a complete refurbishment and extension to include the modern ‘Lichtbau’ area. Heavydrive’s specialist equipment for extremely large and heavy panes was used to assemble the gigantic glass façade elements.
The glass panes measured 7.2 x 3 metres and weighed up to 1.4 tonnes, and all had to be placed under a one-metre deep overhang from the outside. The experienced device operator safely lifted the panes with Heavydrive’s VSG 2000 KMH suction system. This vacuum suction system has a reach of up to 6.7 metres and a lifting capacity of up to 2 tonnes. In combination with the VSG 3500 Konter counterweight system, the glass elements could be moved vertically under the overhang. The counterweight traverse has a lifting capacity of up to 3.5 tonnes, so it had no problem balancing the 1.4-tonne panes. The traverse can be attached to any crane with at least a 4-strand hanger.
The VSG 2000 KMH as well as the VSG 3500 Konter are operated easily by remote control. The vacuum suction system can be rotated by 360 degrees and pivoted by 90 degrees. This enabled the Heavydrive device operator to fit the panes accurately and safely into the opening. Within three days, all eleven panes had been installed safely.
The museum in Frankfurt am Main was opened in 1988 and was the first dedicated Jewish Museum in Germany. One of the exhibits features the estate of the family of Anne Frank. The museum building in the historic Rothschild Palais was refurbished and given a modern extension designed by Staab Architekten. The new museum complex opening is scheduled for April 2020.
