Complex glass installation at the Hyundai "Square Campus"

Heavydrive installs special glass in various formats

At the Hyundai Research Centre in Rüsselsheim, Heavydrive precisely positioned large-format and curved glass elements. Different pane sizes and complex façade solutions called for flexible technology, well-coordinated processes and experienced machine operators.

The building envelope of the Hyundai "Square Campus" combines industrial aesthetics with modern façade technology. To this end, FRENER & REIFER installed 8,200 square metres of rear-ventilated metal cladding, supplemented by a double-skin façade with impact-resistant panes and a mullion-transom façade. High-performance glazing from TVITEC System Glass was also used, including curved glass elements from Doering Berlin. The glazing provides thermal insulation, sun protection and optimised use of natural light, while combining bird protection with a high degree of transparency.

To install the large-format façade panes, Heavydrive used the VSG 1000 KMH and VSG STU 1000 KMH vacuum suction systems with 7-axis forklift manipulators, as well as other equipment. This ensured that panes measuring between 1.4 and 2.7 metres (approx. 4.59 ft to 8.86 ft) wide, with a height of up to 3.9 metres (approx. 13.01 ft) and weighing up to 900 kilograms (approx. 1984 lbs), could be installed without any problems.

Particular precision was also required at the main entrance. Heavydrive lifted two curved glass elements beneath an overhang with millimetre precision. The MRK 86.0 mini crane and the VSG 400 KR vacuum suction system were used. The curved panes measured 2.1 by 2.6 to 2.9 metres (approx. 6.98 by 8.68 to 9.5 ft) and weighed between 351 and 384 kilograms (approx. 773 to 847 lbs).

As Günter Übelacker, Managing Director of Heavydrive, explains: "Our vacuum and installation technology really comes into its own in projects like these: It ensures the safe handling of large-format and special glass panes at great installation heights and in confined spaces. The key here is not just the load-bearing capacity itself, but the precise controllability of the equipment, which allows for positioning accurate to the millimetre."

Thanks to the precise operation of the equipment, the installation team positioned all the glass elements in a controlled manner and fitted them exactly into place without any physical effort. Complex façade projects like the Hyundai "Square Campus" clearly show just how crucial experience, precise processes and flexible installation techniques are to ensuring a project runs smoothly.
